Bachelor of Science in Applied Math
Your mathematics degree program includes a selection of mathematics and statistics courses designed to develop your analytic and problem-solving skills. In addition, both required and elective science and engineering courses will show you the role of mathematics and statistics in a variety of fields. You'll round out your math education with required courses in composition, literature, history, and foreign language. Beyond the required courses, you have the opportunity to fine-tune your degree to match your own interests with over 40 hours of mathematics, technical, and free electives.
The Mathematics and Statistics Department has defined five Emphasis Areas. They are Actuarial Sciences, Algebra/Discrete Mathematics, Applied Analysis, Computational Mathematics, and Statistics. These emphasis areas attempt to fit the desires and interests of the student with the needs of industry. A student seeking a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Mathematics is not required to have an emphasis area. Those students who apply for and complete the requirements of an emphasis area will have this accomplishment noted on their diploma.

Faculty have recently received six outstanding teaching awards and two outstanding advising awards. The outstanding GTA teaching award has gone to a Mathematics and Statistics GTA every year but one since 1994. Results of Missouri S&T's student surveys regarding quality of learning rank the Mathematics and Statistics Department first for the last four semesters.
Major Field Assessment Test-departmentally, our graduating seniors average at the 92nd percentile across the nation.
Faculty members are active in research as well as committed to teaching. Departmental faculty publish 30-40 research papers each year, and every Ph.D. faculty member in the department has published a paper in the last two years.
