Graduate Certificates

We offer graduate certificates in Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics.  These certificates are designed for practicing professionals as well as current students.  Requirements for the Graduate Certificates can be met by completing four graduate-level courses from specified lists.

Research Opportunities

Research interests of the faculty cover a wide spectrum with major concentrations in analysis, differential equations, statistics and topology/dynamical systems.  Several faculty members are actively involved in interdisciplinary work in collaboration with researchers in other departments such as biology, computer science, economics, and engineering.  A limited amount of part-time research support is sometimes available in the summer for doctoral students working on dissertation research.

Financial Assistance

Teaching Assistantships
Most of our graduate students receive financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship by submitting an application for teaching assistantship  The stipend for a half time appointment is expected to be $16,650 for the nine month 2009 - 2010 academic year.  Teaching assistants pay in-state fees, and educational fees beyond the first six credit hours are waived.

Chancellor's Fellowships
Outstanding students who intend to pursue a Ph.D are considered for the Chancellor's Fellowship, which covers all fees for six semesters, including intervening summers.

Professional Societies

Admissions Requirements

Undergraduate GPA and Class Rank
Admission is normally offered to those students who rank in the upper third of their baccalaureate graduating class (or who have done quality work at the graduate level). To meet this requirement, a B average in the last two years of undergraduate effort is considered equivalent to an upper-third standing.

How to Apply

Submit the following:

  • Application for Admission . Electronic submission is an option.  The electronic application will not transmit properly if certain spaces on the form are left blank.  If unsure what to put, you should input N/A in the space.  International students should enter 999-99-9999 for SSN.
  • Official transcripts.   Transcripts must come directly from each college and university attended.
  • GRE scores. We require a minimum subscore of 600 on the quantitative portion and 4.0 on analytical writing.  The advanced mathematics GRE score is not required.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Those who wish to apply for a teaching assistantship must also submit a completed TA application.

International Student Admission:
In addition to the application form, transcripts, and GRE scores, students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English.
