Research Opportunities

A limited amount of part-time research support is sometimes available in the summer for doctoral students working on dissertation research.

Financial Assistance

Teaching Assistantships
For 2001-2002 the academic-year stipend for a half-time teaching assistantship (the normal appointment) is $14,000 and a waiver of out-of-state fees. This is the principal form of financial aid received by our graduate students. Teaching responsibilities average 6 contact hours per week plus the associated preparations for class and grading; GTAs are also required to spend 2 hours per week in the department's tutoring room. The normal course load for a GTA is 9 credit hours, but GTAs pay for not more than 6 credit hours per semester (at the Missouri-student fee rate). Summer school appointments are based on enrollment and are handled separately. An academic-year assistantship is not a guarantee of a summer appointment.

Chancellor's Fellowships
The Chancellor's Fellowship for Ph.D. students with outstanding records provides a waiver of all fees. It is held in addition to a teaching or research assistantship. The Chancellor's Fellowship is limited to U.S. citizens or permanent residents and is renewable for up to six semesters if the student remains enrolled and maintains a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Admissions Requirements

Undergraduate GPA and Class Rank
Admission is normally given to those students who ranked in the upper third of their baccalaureate graduating class or who have done quality work at the graduate level. For this requirement, a B average in the last two years of undergraduate effort is considered equivalent to an upper one-third standing.

How to Apply

  • Submit an Application for Admission . Electronic submission is possible. The electronic application will not be transmitted properly if certain spaces on the form are left blank. If you are unsure or don't know, fill the space with N/A.
  • Submit official transcripts from each college and university attended.
  • Submit GRE scores. The sum of the Quantitative and Analytical subscores should be 1200 or more. The Advanced Mathematics GRE score is no longer required.

International Student Admission:
In addition to the application form, transcripts, and GRE scores, students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English.
Ways to do this are:

  • Achieve a score of at least 570 on the paper-based (230 for computer-based) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Satisfactorily complete Missouri S&T's Applied Language Institute.
